1 YEAR AND 5 YEAR LETTERS TO YOURSELF

When we are as busy as we are with our everyday lives it is sometimes hard to see how far we've come or how much we've changed. Sometimes you look back on an instagram post or your photo feed and remember how you felt at the time or where you were at, and it feels like it was much longer time ago than it actually was. Or maybe you remember making a goal you wanted to achieve and realise that you have achieved that goal without much celebration.

A good way to remind your future self of memories of the past is to write yourself a letter. Not only is writing yourself a letter nice to open in the future, but also it's good to set yourself goals that you want to hold yourself accountable for as well as to see maybe why some goals were not achieved and what would need to change in the future.

1 YEAR LETTER

A good way to start is with a letter address to yourself 1 year from now.

SOME OF THE TOPICS TO INCLUDE:

  • What your days consist of
    • Work wise
    • Personal improvements
    • Everyday things that bring you joy
  • What you'd like to change in a year
  • What goals you'd like to achieve
  • Who you have in your life
  • What you are grateful of
  • Events that feel significant

You can make the letter to be as personal as you want it to, write down your wildest dreams or keep it factual. You can include pictures, clippings, notes from friends, anything really that builds a picture of your current life and future dreams.

5 YEAR LETTER

If you have bigger goals or dreams that might take some time to achieve or you just want to be able to see the change that has naturally happened, you can also write a 5 year letter. Writing this letter is very similar to the 1 year letter and is quite self-explanatory.

THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND:

  • Don't do detailed plans of the future. Things don't always go to plan, so it's very unlikely things will work out exactly the way you'd imagine them now

  • Have a place to keep it where you know you will find it in 5 years time

  • 5 years can be a long time, but don't make too many grand plans if you think you'll only be disappointed when you open the letter and haven't managed to make those plans come true

  • Be creative and open minded, don't be afraid to dream and include smaller goals and bigger goals

All in all have fun and remember you'll always be pleasantly surprised when you open the letters in the future!
